Hedges frame a property. We keep them looking right.
Well-kept hedges define boundaries, soften fence lines and lift kerb appeal in a way very few other landscaping features can. At Granger Gardening we specialise in hedge trimming, shrub shaping and topiary work across Samford, Samford Valley, Camp Mountain, Ferny Grove, The Gap and the wider Brisbane north-west. From a quick tidy of a murraya hedge to full restoration on an overgrown lilly pilly, photinia or box, we get hedges back into shape — and then keep them there.
Species we work with
- Murraya, lilly pilly, photinia, viburnum and bottlebrush
- Buxus (English box), duranta and camellia
- Formal and informal hedges up to 4m
- Topiary spheres, spirals and feature shapes
- Privacy screens and wind-breaks
- Overgrown hedges needing staged restoration
Done properly, not just cut short
Hedge trimming sounds simple, but it isn't. Cut too aggressively, too deep into old wood, or in the wrong season, and you'll end up with bare patches that take seasons to recover. Our approach is about long-term health as well as immediate presentation:
- Trim frequency matched to the species — usually 2–4 times per year
- Sides tapered slightly wider at the base so sunlight reaches lower leaves and the hedge stays dense all the way down
- Sharp, well-maintained blades to avoid tearing and bruising stems
- Every clipping cleaned up and removed — garden left tidier than we found it
Restoration work
Inherited an overgrown hedge from the previous owner? We can help. We'll assess whether a staged restoration over one or two seasons — or a single hard prune — is safer for the species, and plan the work accordingly. We've rescued neglected hedges in Ferny Grove, Camp Mountain and The Gap that clients assumed were beyond saving.
Process
Call on 0437 794 403 or message us through the contact form. We'll visit the garden, walk the hedges with you, agree the shape and height, and send a fixed quote. Once you're happy we book a time that suits. Regular clients are locked into recurring visits so the hedge never gets out of hand again.
Hedge trimming FAQs
When's the best time to trim a hedge in Brisbane?
Most established hedges around Samford handle light trims 2–4 times a year. The safest windows are early spring (September–October) and late autumn (April–May). We avoid hard pruning in the peak of summer or mid-winter when plants are stressed.
How high can you trim?
We handle hedges up to around 4m using proper access equipment. For anything taller, or hedges near power lines, we'll refer you to a qualified arborist rather than risk a dodgy job.
Can you restore an overgrown hedge?
Usually yes, depending on the species. Murraya, lilly pilly and photinia respond well to staged hard pruning over one to two seasons. Buxus and camellia need a gentler approach. We'll assess what's safe before starting, so you don't end up with a dead hedge instead of a tidy one.
Do you clean up the clippings?
Always. All clippings are collected, bagged and removed from site. You'll never come home to a pile of green waste left on the lawn.
